A local teacher at Weymouth Primary School told us that rotoroa island was a Rehab! It was run by The Salvation Army in 1911-2005! And now in 2025 it is a public(ish) island for NZ native animals and plants! Read more on page 3!

In 2008 Rotoroa established the Rotoroa Island Trust Committee to restore the island and make it public to all people. Today it is a predator free Sanctuary for native wildlife in NZ.
